Hard Times were Good Times

I have to tell you that when we look back at the old days, we tend to think those were the good times. Sure, not all were good, but we tend to romanticize history, don’t we? 

I look back at the past jobs I had and how hard I worked and think, that wasn’t so bad, was it? You know, it really wasn’t. I survived and got ahead. Sure, we all want to do better, but my life feels pretty good right now. 

So many people focus on what’s wrong, including me. I don’t know why, but as humans we focus on problems and disasters. 

Why do we do that? I’ll tell you why, because for centuries that is how we survived. We didn’t survive whining or complaining or even by saying, “Have a great day”! We looked for problems, predators, and things that would kill us.

Is that a lion? I could run, or I could kill, otherwise I’ll be killed.

Is that my enemy? Will he kill me? Should I attack or run and hide?

Is there a storm coming? I have to find cover. 

Do I need food? I need to hunt or gather food. 

These are all things that we looked at as problems. 

Today, we don’t have many problems, do we? So we look back at the old days and say how great it was. How people were tougher than. How we were better. But were we?

I don’t think I was. I have grown and matured. I feel better today than I did then. 

However, when I look at some of the things people complain about today, I just wonder what the hell is wrong with them. Do they know how good they have it?

I think most people want to self-destruct, probably because they have it so good they don’t know what hard times are like. If they did, they would appreciate how good they have it now. But they don’t. They create drama and make stupid issues important. The Woke movement is a perfect example. I really don’t care what other people do as long as they don’t hurt anybody and listen to the law. Suddenly we have to control how other people think. While it sounds great to have everyone think like you, it would be an awful world. No individuality would suck, no matter what communist leaders think. Freedom of speech is awesome!! We should all remember how great it is.

So when you look back on the old days, think about how far you’ve come and what you’ve learned from those mistakes. Feel good about yourself.
