Did we learn anything?

What do you want? To live healthy when you’re older or not?

Did you ever look back and realize how many times you made a mistake over and over again? I do that from time to time. That doesn’t mean I correct it. Sometimes our parents just taught us the wrong thing and family lessons are the hardest to break.

My parents grew up during the depression. They kept everything, borderline hoarders. Like the pack rats they were, they saved all kinds of junk. None of it ever became valuable. Sometimes junk is just junk. No valuable antiques were found. Do we really need to keep every magazine we ever got in the mail? No we don’t. Do we need to keep nits and pieces of old Monopoly games if the game board is gone? No. Yet, my mom saved all that junk. FYI – I could not sell any of it on Ebay, it was junk.

I repeat mistakes that I grew up with. I try to improve and my wife tries to help me, as I do her. Yet, sometimes I fall back into old habits. Just like my wife.

The way we eat is heavily influenced by our parents. If they ate bad food, chances are good you will, unless you pay attention.

I was able to change my health habits. I work out almost every day, I eat better than I ever have most of the time. I get plenty of sleep at night, usually 6 to 8 hours. These are good habits.

I tell you this because I want you to make the changes while you’re younger, if you can. When you get to be my age, change is hard. However, it doesn’t stop me from trying new things and working hard to break bad habits. I would recommend that you look at how you live today and really see what’s good for you and what’s bad. You may surprise yourself.

Eating pizza every night before bed is bad, but it won’t affect you until you’re in your 30s.

Not working out, just laying around when you could be walking or doing something is a bad habit. It’s easy to fall into that trap because you tell yourself that you worked hard all day. You probably did, but just laying around watching TV or Netflix won’t help you much either. If you have a physical job, that may compensate for the evening of laziness. But if you sat all day at a desk, then you need to evaluate your health.

Getting healthy is hard, but I would like to believe it’s worth it. I will be 60 this year and I don’t take any medication. No high blood pressure meds, no diabetes treatments, none of that. All because I invested my spare time into eating better and exercising.

Unfortunately most people I know have had heart attacks by this age. Many have stents put in to prevent future heart attacks.

A lot of people I know have had knee and hip surgery. They’re my age or younger and blame high school sports but most of them have done little to present it over the past 20 years. Now it catches up with them.

My point is if you can create healthy habits around eating and exercise, then you have a better chance of living healthy when you get older. I personally want a great quality of life well into my 90s.
