I think most people don’t understand how to invest in themselves. You may not know what this means, so let me explain.
For one, I think you need to look at your own health. This could be your physique or your health in general. In fact, I would argue that it’s both. You need to work out to remain healthy, but diet matters too. Eat right and stay fit. These are all investments.
I live in the US where fast food and junk food is everywhere. It is very hard to eat healthy and build healthy habits.
I work out every day because it is easier to make exercise a habit. To do it every day makes it a habit and I feel bad when I miss it. I have been working hard to exercise daily for about 30 years. It’s not easy. It’s work, but now that it’s a habit, it feels hard to miss a day. While I do miss days, usually due to weather (snow), I generally don’t miss many days. I feel bad when I miss a day.
Eating healthy is really hard. If you go out to eat it is so easy to just eat and eat. At home, I really miss snacking and eating chips. I miss the fattening snacks, that was the hardest thing. I gave up soda, that was really hard. Eating right was one of the hardest habits to adopt. I still fall off the wagon and get something that is bad for me from time to time. Why? Because sometimes I am weak and need something to feel better. It’s really hard not to cheat on a diet.
The one thing that can help you keep in line is to weigh yourself everyday and write down your daily weight. It really helps to see when you go up or down in weight. Write it down so you can track progress or failure. Failure sucks! Success is when you can lose weight and keep it off. That is a win!
Just think long term if you can. When you get older you see how many people have heart attacks and take blood pressure medicine. You also see a lot of people get cancer. Some people are predispositioned to it, no thanks to genetics.
One other thing you notice is all the people that ate bad all the time have a lot of problems when they get older. I see it all the time, even doctors who see this all the time tend to live for the moment.
I am not saying you should punish yourself or miss out on something you really enjoy, which is usually a good meal. What I am asking you is to challenge yourself to find balance. Enjoy some things but not in excess.
Be good to yourself and it’s nice to live for today, but if you take care of yourself, then you will live a long time with a great quality of life. Sure, things happen and you will have mishaps, but if you’re healthy, then the odds are in your favor.
