Is it too late to make up for lost time?

What do you intend to do when you get older? What are you ignoring now, today, that you think you will regret 20 years from now?

Did you ever realize there were things you didn’t do that you wanted to do? At work it could have been something you forgot or a customer you didn’t get back to. At home you may have forgotten something your wife wanted or a kids event.

Sometimes we forget things, but what about life when we look back at all the things we either left behind or forgot because life got in the way? That’s when the reality sets in.

I have been so busy with my life that I didn’t keep in touch with so many friends. Life moved ahead so fast that now, many of them have passed away. That makes me sad. I hope they had good lives.

So many relatives have passed as well. Before you know it we’re the last person standing. Very sad yet, it’s better than being the first to go.

We have to put things into perspective. Sometimes I feel guilty, even bad about not keeping in touch. Yet, I got so busy with work and family that nothing else mattered at that time.

The one thing I did learn is that we’re all mortal. We won’t live forever and that we have to make the most of this time on earth. No matter what you believe, I don’t know any people that live forever. I intend to remain healthy for as many years as possible and live the best life I can. To me, quality of life is so important. I lost too many family and friends where they suffered way too long before they passed. I hope it doesn’t happen to me or my wife.

I saw friends die of disease and even loneliness. That makes me sad. I wish I could have spoken to them more often.

I have lost so many family members to cancer and other diseases, I wish I had spent more time with them.

While I feel bad, it’s too late because all of that stuff happened. I can’t change the past, no matter how much I wish I could. I am not sure if I could have helped or if things would have gotten worse. Sometimes it’s better not to know the truth. This is another lesson, we can’t live with regrets. That too is another thing that will eat at us, but we have to understand why we made our decisions at that time. If we realize we had good reasons, then the regrets fade away.

I’m turning 60 this year and still hit the gym almost every day. I intend to keep that record up for decades to come. I am fortunate.

What good habits do you have? Do you eat right? Do you stay healthy? Do you spend quality time with family, friends, and loved ones? It all adds up and adds to your quality of life. I think we need that balance, and I hope you do too.

I am asking you to look ahead 20 years or so and think about what you could do today to make sure you don’t have regrets in the future. Regrets can eat at you just like the loss of a loved one. I think you need to look back and minimize the pain, feel the happiness, remember the good times.
