Can Tech people really be happy?

Even tech people can be optimistic.

I work in tech. If you’ve ever worked with engineers you realize that their main job is to find things that are wrong. Even though I feel I’m optimistic, well, most of the time. Let’s say 90% optimistic. Most engineers, not so much.

For instance, here are some questions they ask on a daily basis:

  • What happened? Why did it break?
  • What will go wrong, what will break?
  • How did this happen?
  • What did you do to make this fail?
  • This will fail or break, here’s why.
  • When this thing goes south, don’t call me.

Can you blame then for being so pessimistic at work? It’s their job.

If you work in tech then you know most, about 90% of tech people feel this way. Me, I am the balance between sales, tech, project management (PM), and the customer. This is a mix of emotions.

For instance, all engineers want to be in sales. Do you know why? Because they would give the customer 100 reasons why it won’t work. They would spend all their time talking the customer out of doing anything.

PMs will give you 100 reasons why it needs to be micromanaged and how they should control the project and the customer should be hands off.

Sales is a little more rosy, they’re quite optimistic and good sales people find out what the customer wants and needs, then what they’re willing to pay for. That’s where I come in, I put the solution together.

So, most of these groups are pretty negative most of the time. Not about their jobs, they are all pretty good at what they do. They just know that things can go wrong at any given moment. If they work as a team, they can react to ensure it doesn’t happen. Sales has to lift everyone up, don’t they?

It’s hard to go through life looking for problems and still be optimistic. I feel I am quite optimistic. I weigh out risks, but feel good about the future. I know that, for the most part, things work out. If something goes wrong, and something always does, I know it will be a learning experience. However, I don’t expect failure often. If I do, then I usually have a contingency plan.

If my car breaks down, I have Uber and AAA to bail me out.

If a credit card gets stolen, I have a backup just in case.

If I have plans and they fall through, it happens.

Inevitably things go wrong, when they do, oh well. I may be hurt or disappointed for a time, but things do get better, don’t they. If they didn’t we would lose hope. Losing hope sucks, ask almost anyone who left North  Korea. They generally lost hope until they made it to this country.

WhenI talk to some of my Russian friends, they can’t get over how hopeful and optimistic Americans are. Sure, we get pissed off, but for the most part we see a brighter and better future. I feel we get it, eventually. In America, things may change for the worse before they get better. They always get better. Always.

That is why we should all remain optimistic. Things will get better, at least until we die. And if we die, all our problems are behind us, aren’t they? Of Course.

Things always get better. There is plenty to be optimistic about. Just look ahead.
