Can Optimism help you live longer?

Let’s start focusing on the positive aspects of life, good health, loving relationships, and our stable jobs, while still being aware of the worries and uncertainties. Find your healthy balance. It’s natural to be concerned about loved ones and job security, but maintaining an optimistic outlook can be a source of strength and resilience.

I often wondered if having optimism  in life can help you live longer, basically because you have something to look forward to. Then I wondered if that was hope, if you have hope will you live longer. There is a study that says it’s possible, not fact. 

If you have a disease but are optimistic you can and will live longer, it gives you hope. Does it help you live longer or is it false hope? I have to wonder.

At my age, I am talking to more and more people that have cancer or some type of health problem. Some have faith they will get better through treatment, but the treatment just ruins them.

Personally I wonder if the treatment is just cruel or if it honestly helps. I hear stories on both, some get better, for a while, while others don’t end well. Maybe you have to play the odds to get better. 

Maybe optimism is what gives you hope. Maybe the treatment is what gives you hope and that makes you optimistic. 

Thank GOD I am blessed with good health. 

I feel I am optimistic. I feel that’s because I was able to move on with my life, forgive many in my past, and the future looks quite bright to me. I am at a good point in my life, my wife and I are doing quite well, and I feel pretty good every day. 

Don’t get me wrong, there are things that I worry about. Love ones that have issues, friends that have issues, and a job that is laying off a huge number of people. 

On the other hand, I have a good job, I am healthy, my wife is healthy, we’re doing pretty good. I have a home and a roof over my head. I can afford my bills, even though they’re 30% higher than they were 3 years ago, I can still stay afloat. 

I can see both sides and often think the good side outweighs the bad. 

With all of this said, I know so many people, friends and acquaintances that look at the bad side all the time. They often talk to me about how they will lose their jobs, they have health issues, they know people that are sick and dying. They often talk about doom and gloom. It’s where they focus. 

It’s all about what you focus on!

So then it hit me, it all depends on what you focus on for any length of time. It really helps to have a partner or a spouse that can help you focus on the good. 

  • If we focus on the bad, we assume doom and become doubtful and pessimistic. 
  • If we focus on the good and the upside, we are hopeful and optimistic.

I do get focused on bad things at times. This is often a bad thing and I need to talk it out with someone, either a friend or my wife. Then I can move on. I really wish I didn’t focus on these things, but I do.

I Want to do better. I want to become a better person, but I fall back into a cycle of negativity at times. I don’t know why but it drives me nuts.

So, focus on the good things. 

  • If you go to the gym, focus on your health. 
  • If you eat right, focus on your health. 
  • If you have a good job and are financially stable, focus on that.
  • If you have good friends, focus on that.
  • If you have a great family, focus on that.

Then you can become an optimistic person because you have something to look forward to. You become hopeful. 

So I honestly do think that optimism can help you live longer because it gives you healthy hope. Honest, healthy, hope.
